In a festive endeavor to invigorate downtown Caribou, S.W. Collins Company has constructed eight chalet-style huts for vendors participating in the Caribou Christmas Market. These charming wooden structures, each measuring eight by seven feet, are designed to enhance the holiday shopping experience on Saturdays leading up to Christmas.
The inspiration for these vendor chalets came from S.W. Collins co-owner Sam Collins, who, after visiting European “Christmas Villages,” envisioned a similar tradition for Caribou. Embracing this vision, the company built the huts and offered thier use to the city, aiming to foster a new holiday tradition and stimulate downtown activity.
Situated in the Downtown Mall area behind Brambleberry Market on Sweden Street, the chalets feature large windows, allowing vendors to showcase their products effectively while engaging with customers. The enclosed design provides a cozy environment, essential for northern Maine’s brisk winter weather.
The Caribou Christmas Market commenced on November 30, coinciding with Small Business Saturday, and will continue every Saturday until Christmas. The vendor lineup varies each weekend, offering a diverse array of local crafts and products.
The market’s debut saw a vibrant turnout, with shoppers exploring the festive stalls amidst the sounds of holiday music. The event also featured additional activities, including author meet-and-greets at the library and open houses at the fire station and various downtown businesses. A decorated wagon, dubbed the fire department’s “sleigh,” provided charming transportation, ferrying visitors between the market and other local attractions.
S.W. Collins Company’s initiative reflects a commitment to community engagement and downtown revitalization. By introducing these European-inspired chalets, the company hopes to establish a cherished holiday tradition that supports local vendors and attracts shoppers to Caribou’s downtown area.
As the holiday season progresses, the Caribou Christmas Market promises to be a focal point of festive cheer, bringing the community together in celebration and commerce.
